AGFUND and the Joint SDG Fund Join Forces to Strengthen Food Security in the Horn of Africa

The Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND) and the Joint SDG Fund are joining forces to boost food security and resilience across the Horn of Africa.

The framework for this effort is the Global Flagship Initiative for Food Security, a coalition backed by the AGFUND and more than 90 partners worldwide, which champions sustainable food systems, community empowerment and long-term resilience. In partnership with the Joint SDG Fund and UN Country Teams, under the leadership of UN Resident Coordinators, the initiative will channel innovation, investment, and collaboration to deliver large-scale, lasting change for food security and resilience across the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) countries in Africa.

“With this strong foundation, the partnership is well-positioned to translate commitments into measurable impact—building food systems that are resilient, inclusive, and capable of providing nutritious food for all,” said Ms. Amina Mohammed, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General.

A Regional Roadmap for Change

Grounded in the Ministerial Communiqué on Food Security, adopted by IGAD Member States in Addis Ababa (in July 2025), the partnership advances a shared vision for transformation. It calls for stronger regional food systems to combat food insecurity and hunger in the IGAD region, addressing the twin drivers of climate change and conflict, and for a rapid expansion of sustainable agricultural technologies supported by smarter cross-border cooperation.

In Cameroon, this momentum began with an investment pitch led by the Food Systems National Convenor and coordinated by the Resident Coordinator. That project—now backed by seed funding from the Joint SDG Fund—will scale up further with support from the Global Flagship Initiative.

With this united agenda, the partnership is turning commitment into measurable impact, building food systems that are resilient, inclusive, and capable of feeding every community.

A Call to Action

As droughts, conflict, and climate shocks intensify, the need for collective action has never been greater. The Global Flagship Initiative represents exactly that: a catalyst for change that unites governments, partners, and communities in a common purpose.

Through this partnership, the global community can reshape food systems, restore resilience, and deliver on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals.
