CONASAN RECEIVES CONTRIBUTION FROM UNICEF AND UNDP FOR THE GREAT NATIONAL CRUSADE FOR NUTRITION.


The National Food and Nutrition Security Council, (El Consejo Nacional de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional) CONASAN, held its regular meeting number 3, in the Guatemala Room, which was chaired by the Vice President of the Republic, Guillermo Castillo Reyes, who received the support of the United Nations, for the food and nutritional security of the country, through the Great National Crusade for Nutrition

The agenda began with the presentation of the progress of the Annual Food and Nutrition Security Operational Plan-POASAN-2020, which was in charge of the lawyer Ofelia Arriaza, DPME-SESAN Planning Coordinator.

 

In the second point, the advances of the Brigades in the active search for cases of Acute Malnutrition were presented, by Mario Figueroa, from the SIAS-MSPAS.

 

Another topic on the agenda was the Route for the revision of the SAN National Policy and formulation of the Strategic Plan for Food and Nutritional Security-PESAN, led by Mario Morales, from SESAN.

The Chronic Malnutrition Analysis based on MSPAS administrative records, directed by Juan Roberto Mendoza, SESAN monitoring coordinator, was also presented. The lawyer Maritza Méndez Sazo, explained about the progress of the Great National Crusade for Nutrition.

 

For her part, Rebeca Arias, United Nations representative, spoke about the Joint Program, "Strengthening the Financial Architecture for the financing of the Great National Crusade for Nutrition."

 

Arias explained that: “In this two-year Program, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) of the World Food Program will participate as advisor, for their experience in food security for the population, "It is the first project that we launched in Guatemala as part of this Fund that is aimed at supporting national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals," he concluded.

This Program, in line with the Strategic Plan for Food and Nutrition Security (PESAN 2020-2025), is a contribution of 7.7 million quetzals from the United Nations System, in which the Fund for the Sustainable Development Goals (F-ODS ) joins efforts in the fight against malnutrition in the country and strengthens the Social Development Pillar of the General Policy of the Government of Guatemala 2020-2024.

 Vice President Castillo Reyes, who chairs CONASAN, expressed his satisfaction with this contribution from the United Nations and stated: “We hope that with this more instances will join the Great National Crusade for Nutrition, because the implementation of the Joint Program will allow the measurement of the scope of the interventions focused on children under five years of age, women and rural and indigenous population in poverty and extreme poverty.

 The secretary of SESAN Maritza Méndez de Oliva, pointed out the importance of the Program, because elements of gender equality and human rights are incorporated, especially in girls and boys who require urgent attention."
