Special on Social Protection: Malawi's Joint Programme aims to support the Government of Malawi to adapt the national social protection system to meet emergency food needs and reduce the vulnerability of those most at risk of food insecurity by 2022, while strengthening the social protection system for all vulnerable households across the lifecycle.

Leveraging the expertise of three implementing UN agencies to accomplish its targets, UNICEF, WFP, and ILO have in-country and regional expertise in providing direct social protection system implementation and technical assistance. The programme combines advancing an innovative Shock-Sensitive Social Protection (SSSP) prototype with reinforced financial structures and the transformation of existing policies into legal frameworks to enhance the social protection system to be more robust, comprehensive, and sustainable, leaving no one behind.

Coordinator – Joint UN Programme on Social Protection

Kendall is the coordinator for the UN joint programme, Social Protection for the Sustainable Development Goals (SP4SDG), based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Since 2011, she has been supporting both NGOs and UN agencies with coordination, information management, and reporting in the health, logistics, and emergency response/preparedness sectors in several duty stations, including Liberia, Nepal, and Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Global Inequalities and Responses, and a Master’s degree in development research.

Louis B. Msuku

Social Protection National Programme Officer in the International Labour Organisation

Louis B. Msuku supports the policy and financing components of the SP4SDG joint programme in Malawi. He has worked in the social protection sector for the past five years, having previously worked for Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Government of Malawi. Louis is currently a Social Protection National Programme Officer in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Malawi office.

Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping Officer for the World Food Programme

Lazarus Gonani is a Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) Officer for the World Food Programme (WFP), based in Lilongwe, Malawi. He has 12 years of experience in programme policy and vulnerability analysis with WFP. He has been supporting the Government of Malawi with coordinating food security and nutrition security analysis. Prior to this, he headed the Nutrition Unit of WFP-Malawi for 6 years. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture and a Master’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition.
