The closing ceremony of the Estates General held on Thursday, January 20, 2022, was an opportunity to present and officially launch the project entitled "accelerating the SDGs through a digitized, innovative and accessible statistical system in the Comoros" with funding from the United Nations pooled fund Joint SDG Fund to support the implementation of the SDGs.
The Union of the Comoros organized the first Estates General of Statistics under the patronage of the Minister of Finance, Budget and Banking Sector in partnership with the United Nations System in the Union of the Comoros, and in collaboration with the various development stakeholders including the private sector and civil society from January 18 to 20, 2022 in Moroni.
For three (3) days, the technical exchanges of the participating experts focused on the revitalization of the National Statistical System (SNN) for planning and development purposes.
It is important to note that the main mission of the SSN is to provide the public administration, regional and international institutions, NGOs, the media, researchers and the public with up-to-date and timely statistical information relating to all economic, financial, social, and demographic, cultural and environmental fields. In addition, the availability of an effective, inclusive, modern and resilient SNN is essential for the monitoring and implementation of the country's global development programs, in particular, Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063 of the African Union, and contextualized by the country through the Emerging Comoros Plan (PCE) and the Intermediate Development Plan (PDI).
The need to organize the Estates General stems from the need for the SSN to strengthen its capacities in terms of governance and coordination of statistical production, data management, human and financial resources, and efforts to partnership.
The two-year project constitutes a new contribution by the United Nations to strengthening national statistical capacities and will mainly mobilize 4 UN agencies: UNCTAD, WHO, UNDP and UNFPA. The national structure anchoring the project remains the National Institute of Statistics, Economic and Demographic Studies (INSEED). For the United Nations System in the Union of the Comoros, this project plays a catalytic role in mobilizing all stakeholders for the development of the National Statistical System. It will thus serve as a pilot phase for future large-scale joint projects; partnership being a fundamental pillar of any national statistical system.
