Life in times of COVID-19 and informality

Alejandro Alcívar currently lives in Guayaquil, Ecuador. As many young workers in the country, he does not have access to the Ecuadorian social protection system and currently works in the informal sector. He has had several informal jobs; his most recent ones were as an Uber driver in one of Ecuador’s largest cities, where the average earnings are about $30 per day, and as a local workshop assistant.

COVID-19 and Social Protection: Ecuador’s Joint SDG Program has become a key instrument to develop social protection strategies

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for a coordinated response. In this sense, the Government’s National Social cabinet invited UN Ecuador to join its newly created advisory team, tasked with developing a social protection strategy to mitigate the crisis and propose recovery solutions.

Ecuador's Joint Programme: Social Protection for Young Men and Women in the Informal Economy Project

On March 6th, 2020, members of the UNDP Accelerator Lab in Ecuador summoned a small group of young people to discuss labor informality as part of the activities of the Social Protection for Young Men and Women in the Informal Economy Project.
