Strengthening the Social Protection System in Tanzania

The programme brief description

Despite positive economic growth, there has been little reduction in poverty, especially in rural areas in Tanzania over the past decade. The purpose of the UN Joint Programme is thus to assist the Government of Tanzania with the sustainable expansion of social protection benefits and services. Through addressing and alleviating critical bottlenecks in Tanzania’s social protection system, both in Tanzania Mainland and in Zanzibar, the proposed programme will facilitate the design, financing, and delivery of rights-based social protection that comprehensively and effectively prevents and responds to poverty in the long run.

Approach

The programme will contribute to the enhanced design and delivery capacity of Tanzania’s main social assistance programme, which covers both Mainland and Zanzibar. The programme’s components include:

  • Social Assistance bills;
  • strategies for financing social protection for Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland;
  • provision of social protection training for >150 government officials;
  • implementation of the TASAF Gender Action Plan;
  • evidence on productive and economic impacts of the Productive Social Safety Net programme, including on the local economy;
  • Roll out of the Stawisha Maisha initiative phase II to strengthen nutrition impact
  • Effective and inclusive planning of Public Works under the Productive Social Safety Net programme

Target groups
