Older people and unpaid work in Chile. Economic outlook and valuation

Personas-mayores-y-trabajo-no-remunerado-en-Chile-NODO-Series-60

The social consequences of demographic aging represent an area of growing political, social and academic interest that frequently focuses on economic costs and makes invisible the enormous contribution of the elderly population to society and the development opportunities that it involves.

This publication aims to recognize the unpaid productive work carried out by older people in Chile, by estimating its economic value and its contribution to the national economy. This exercise is expected to contribute to the elimination of hegemonic cultural representations about old age, which limit their full integration into society and the possibilities of building an inclusive, resilient and sustainable reactivation in a context of progressive population aging.

The inclusion of groups at risk of exclusion requires, as an initial measure, knowing and making visible their contributions to the development of our societies, a process to which this study seeks to contribute from an integrative perspective.
