Installation of the Closing Gaps Coordination Committee: Social Protection for Women in Mexico


This project takes place in a context where Mexico has demonstrated the will to improve access to social protection and decent work for the most vulnerable women.

Mexico City, March 27, 2020 - Closing gaps: Social protection for women in Mexico, carried out the installation of the Coordination Committee of this UN interagency project in Mexico.

This project is financed through the Joint SDG Fund for the Sustainable Development Goals, and the International Labor Organization (ILO), UN Women and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participate in alliance with the Directorate of the 2030 Agenda at the Headquarters of the Office of the Presidency of the Republic and other dependencies of the Government of Mexico at the federal and local levels.

With the installation of the Coordination Committee, the work of the Closing Gaps: Social Protection for Women in Mexico project is officially started, which will last 2 years and will work with special attention in Mexico City, Chiapas, State of Mexico, Jalisco and Oaxaca, with the aim of contributing to:

  • The implementation of multisectoral policies, for women's access to social protection, which include the establishment of the permanent social security system,
  • Formalization strategies for paid domestic workers,
  • The development of a national care system,
  • Strategies of formalization and extension of coverage in social protection for temporary rural workers,
  • Strengthening the extension of social protection coverage for women and,
  • Increased knowledge of paid domestic workers and their employers about the permanent social security system.

This project takes place in a context where Mexico has demonstrated the will to improve access to social protection and decent work for the most vulnerable women, such as rural and indigenous women, as well as paid domestic workers, by including This sector in the compulsory social security system, and the ratification, by the Senate of the Republic, of ILO Convention 189, on domestic workers, in December 2019.
