Brief Description

The joint programme titled 'Assessing scalability of climate-resilient models for food systems transformation in Kenya: the climate-friendly home grown-school feeding programme and the Inclusive and Sustainable Coffee Value Chain' aims to evaluate the feasibility and scalability of investments in two critical food systems dimensions in Kenya, focusing on enhancing the coffee value chain and scaling up the national school feeding programme to promote inclusivity and sustainability.

Expected key results

"The expected results from the programmes are as follows: Inclusive and Sustainable Coffee Value chain: • Clear understanding of the coffee value chain and the actors and the environment in which they operate, including the local and global markets. The holistic approach will bring together the various Venture Capital actors to improve confidence, trust and inclusivity. • Develop capacity building methodology and training for value chain actors, as well as explore the development of a financial mechanism to support small holders. • Develop a communication and advocacy strategy to position and create a multiplier effect of this initiative in the Kenyan ecosystem and beyond.  Climate Friendly Home-Grown School Feeding:  • A model for climate-friendly aggregator in the ASALs is tested and adopted for the scale-up of the national climate-friendly home-grown school feeding programme to connect smallholders to schools and contribute to achieving the 10 million learners target by 2030 and to sustainable food systems transformation. • Effective coordination mechanism set-up among stakeholders (government and non-government) for the successful scale-up of the programme.  • Enhanced localization, ownership and sustainability through engagement with and sensitization of local communities, children, parents, school authorities, smallholder producers, value chain actors and other stakeholders.  Overall • Two fully-fledged Joint Programme proposals for the Climate-Friendly Home-Grown School Feeding Programme and for the Coffee Value Chain are developed."
