Brief Description

The joint programme titled 'Just Energy Transition: Accelerating Access to Clean Energy in Botswana (JET Access)' aims to enhance renewable energy uptake in Botswana, particularly in rural areas, by implementing a systems approach that promotes biogas usage, develops a clean cooking roadmap, and engages youth in advocacy for sustainable energy practices.

The joint programme focuses on accelerating access to clean energy in Botswana through a systems approach that integrates renewable energy solutions, particularly biogas, to meet domestic energy demands, especially in rural areas. It enhances youth engagement in energy transition, develops a clean cooking roadmap, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices, directly benefiting over 600 children and creating 10 jobs. The programme strengthens food security, reduces poverty, and empowers women while addressing climate change and advancing several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG1, SDG2, SDG5, SDG7, SDG8, SDG13, and SDG17.

Expected key results

  1. By 2026, the capacity for construction, maintenance and monitoring of small-scale biogas digesters will be enhanced
  2. A Roadmap for scaling up clean cooking in Botswana will be developed as a policy recommendation and potential input to increase the ambition of the next NDC.
  3. Awareness and sensitisation of adolescents on climate change mitigation, green energy and green jobs will be strengthened.
