Brief Description

The joint programme titled 'Just Energy Transition in Equatorial Guinea: Enhancing Food Security and Livelihoods through Renewable Energy Solutions in Rural Communities' aims to address socio-economic disparities in rural areas by providing solar-powered electricity and supporting agricultural value addition, thereby improving food security and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The programme enhances food security and livelihoods in rural Equatorial Guinea by providing solar-powered electricity and supporting agricultural value addition. It establishes solar mini-grids and food processing units, significantly improving access to clean energy and reducing post-harvest losses. Approximately 477 individuals benefit directly, with a focus on empowering local farmers and entrepreneurs. The initiative strengthens the artisanal fish value chain and promotes sustainable energy solutions, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to clean energy, zero hunger, and decent work, ultimately fostering inclusive growth and climate resilience in the region.

Expected key results

A comprehensive national policy framework is established, offering incentives (e.g., tax/duty waivers, capital grants) and enhanced capacity for stakeholders, driving the adoption of clean energy infrastructure for rural and coastal livelihoods.

The artisanal fish value chains in target areas are strengthened through the installation of renewable energy solutions, including solar-powered refrigeration, enhanced storage, assets, value chain concentration, and community training, increasing market integration and fish product viability.

A detailed energy assessment is completed, identifying biomass resource availability, energy potential, and the feasibility of biomass energy generation, resulting in a pilot project with engaged stakeholders and a clear plan for scalable biomass solutions.
