North Macedonia faces some of Europe’s highest air pollution levels, with over 60% of its electricity still generated from coal. The Green Finance Facility is a United Nations-supported initiative tackling this challenge head-on by expanding access to renewable energy and energy efficiency finance for those who need it most.

Under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator and implemented by UNDP with IOM and UNECE, the programme partners with the government, EBRD, and local financial institutions to support small businesses and underserved households—including women-led, migrant, and disability-affected families. By early 2025, over 90 clean energy projects have been financed, helping install 3.5 MW of new renewable capacity and avoid 2,700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
