Transforming Jordan’s Agrifood System for Sustainability Resilience
In support of Jordan’s 2021 to 2030 National Food Security Strategy, the Joint Programme implemented by FAO and UNIDO with funding from the Joint SDG Fund aims to accelerate the transformation of the country’s agrifood systems. With a focus on smallholder inclusion, innovation, and blended financing, the programme addresses urgent challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and economic pressures that disproportionately affect small-scale farmers, women, youth, and refugees. By embedding systems-based approaches into national plans, the initiative seeks to boost food security, resilience, and inclusive growth across Jordan’s food sector.
The programme identifies three strategic entry points in the fresh fruits and vegetables sector: upgrading the citrus value chain, establishing climate-smart post-harvest centers, and developing inclusive market systems. Complemented by targeted gender and social inclusion efforts, capacity-building, and a national monitoring and evaluation framework, these efforts will improve value addition, market access, and sustainability. With more than 600 stakeholders engaged, the programme lays the groundwork for systemic change that empowers local producers and strengthens Jordan’s agrifood sector as a driver of sustainable development.
