Building Forward Better by Safeguarding Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services


This video covers the launch of the Joint Programme in Samoa: ‘Building Forward Better by Safeguarding Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services.’ It was followed by a brief development roundtable on the topic of ‘Valuing Terrestrial and Marine Ecosystem Services, Community Participation and Governance.’ The UNJP on Ecosystem Services aims for key contributions to the: UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), specifically, actions 6-9; the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), specifically, societal goals 5-6 and research and development goal 7; and, specifically, to support the development of policy and planning, the collection of data and valuation of ecosystem services, and the development of scenarios for the future, as well as reporting against SDGs 11-15, and building a case for investment in ecosystem services in Samoa. Among UN Organizations, UNESCO leads, with participation from UNESCAP and UNEP. The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is also closely involved in the work with the implementing partner, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE). Alongside MNRE, the Scientific Research Organization (SROS) is another important national partner.
